3). Pick one concept from the assigned reading that you found useful or interesting and discuss it.
One concept from the reading that I found really interesting was the idea of communicating in the public sphere. The book looks at this concept and compares it to communicating in the private sphere. The public sphere is communication as a member of a group with a topic that applies to many people. The private sphere is communication with only our own interests in mind. An example of communication in the public sphere would be a mayor, speaking at a town meeting. He’s speaking as a member of the community, to other members of the community about issues that affect them all. An example of communication in the private sphere is when a teenager asks their parents for permission to do something. They are only focused on an issue that directly affects them, with no concern to any group they may be involved in.

Hi Nicciri!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post this week. I believe the concept you chose is also interesting. I like the way you incorporated the book's interperetation of the term "communicating in the private sphere". I also like the way you gave an example of what it might be. Your example of a mayor giving a speach in a town hall meeting was key to me further understanding the term "public sphere". I also enjoyed reading about your other example of the term "private sphere" and thought it was great how you gave the expamle of a teenager asking permission to his or her parents to go out. Your post was great!
Hello Nicciri! One simple question this week: Why do you think communicating in the public sphere is focused on so much for study?
ReplyDeleteHi Nicciri,
ReplyDeleteI really liked you examples for both Private and Public spheres. The book says that our society emphasizes individualism more than community and that is why a lot of people shy away from speaking in the public sphere. I think the book did a good job of citing several individuals who joined the public sphere and accomplished great things. One example was Magic Johnson who disclosed he had AIDS and another was the founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Overall the public sphere is the focus of so much study for just that- it is public, available for the world to critique. On the other hand, many people don't get the chance to witness private communication.
